What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is another term for counseling. This can take place in many different formats (individual, couples, group or family), however, the end goal is all the same; to help the individual(s) enhance their lives by improving their current situation(s), increasing effective coping skills and learning how to effectively manage the current stressor(s) impacting their life which is creating the imbalance. There are many different approaches that can be utilized in working with clients to help them achieve their goals that range from Cognitive Behavioral (helping clients to identify and change negative thinking and behavioral patterns) to Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (helping clients to regulate emotions) to a more hands approach with therapies such as Play and Creative Therapies.

Your therapist will determine which approach will be most beneficial to your therapeutic journey after you have completed an initial assessment. Psychotherapy is best utilized when it is being actively participated in; this includes attending all regularly scheduled sessions, engaging during sessions and sometimes completing of homework assignments. Psychotherapy is a delicate process that does require a commitment on behalf of the client, so it is important that you have a good understanding of your role as the client and to clarify any expectations you may have before you begin.
