Family Therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy is a form of Psychotherapy (also known as family counseling). In this format, family members come together to resolve conflicts and improve communication among one another. Similar to individual psychotherapy, family members learn valuable skills and the intention is to help improve a current imbalance due to a stressor(s). This could include a wide array of concerns such as substance abuse of a family member, parenting style conflicts, infidelity, interpersonal communication conflicts, loss of role boundaries, domestic violence of a family member and so forth. Family therapy can also be in the form of education as such as providing information on ways of coping with a family member’s mental illness, such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder etc. Family therapy can vary in the length of sessions and in who may be willing to participate. Please remember it is not any anyone’s best interest to force a loved one to participate.
